Third Chapter Meeting – Wednesday, December 7, 2011

The 3rd Associated General Contractors (AGC) Chapter Meeting will be held in joint with ASCE on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 6:30 PM in Marston 132.

Our guest speaker is Scott Michalak, the chief of the Geotechnical/Water Resources Branck for the Army Corps of Engineers. He will be discussing “Levy Safety and Construction of Our National Infrastructure”.

As always, refreshments will be provided.

Tour of NLSB – Friday, December 2, 2011

We will be hosting a tour of the New Laboratory Science Building (NLSB)  with Whiting-Turner on Friday, December 2nd at 3:00PM. Note that participants must be members. If you are interest, please e-mail agc@ecs.umass.edu  and request to be added to the sign-up list.

Participants must wear longs pants closed-toed shoes (steel-toed boots are preferred), and safety glasses (sun glasses are okay too).  Hard hats and vests will be provided.

**Note: If your $10 member must be received by Wednesday, November 30th, or your spot will be forfeited to those on the wait list. You may contact Tim Light (tlight@student.umass.edu), our treasurer to arrange a time to meet.

Second Chapter Meeting – Thursday, November 17, 2011

The 2nd Associated General Contractors (AGC) Chapter Meeting will be held Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 6:00 PM in Marston 220. Our guest speaker Robert Dermody is an assistant professor of architecture at Roger Williams. He received his BA in engineering from UMass Amherst and MBA in architecture at the University of Illinois. We are excited to hear him discuss “Let’s Talk!  Why & How Architects, Engineers and Contractors Need to Communicate”.

We will hold sign-ups after the meeting for a New Laboratory Science Building (NLSB) tour with Whiting-Turner scheduled for Friday, December 2nd at 3:00PM. Participants must be members.

Also, a reminder that we will also collect $10 member dues for the academic year. The dues help us to provide refreshments at meetings and transportation to events and activities throughout the year. First year students may join for free. Nonmembers may attend the meeting.

Pizza will be provided thanks to a donation by Bruno’s Pizza, located on Main Street in Amherst.

First Chapter Meeting – Wednesday, September 28, 2011

The first AGC Chapter Meeting of the semester will be on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 6:00 PM in Marston 132.  The guest speaker will be a UMass alumni, Kyle Murphy, from Baltazar Contractor out of Ludlow, MA. Kyle was the former President of the UMass AGC chapter and is now a project engineering supervisor. He is passionate speaker and wishes to share his presentation ”An Introductory Discussion About the Construction Indsutry”.

Remember to bring your resume if you would like Kyle to give you feedback after the meeting. We will also hold sign-ups for our “Atkins Roundabouts and Olympia Oaks Site Development Field Trip” and Habitat for Humanity after the meeting. As always, pizza and soda will be provided.

Open Officer Positions

AGC is currently looking to fill officer positions for next year. Elections will be held during the next month. Becoming an officer will create many opportunities for networking with members of the construction industry. It is also a great way to become more involved in the department and develop leadership skills. In addition, there are multiple opportunities for scholarships through both the state and national chapters of AGC. Site Plan Reading Seminar – Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Kyle Murphy from Baltazar Contractors will be offering a seminar on site plan reading on Wednesday, March 30th at 6:00 PM in the Higgins Room in Marston Hall. You must be an AGC member to attend. For more information, please contact one of the officers.

OSHA 10 – Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2

AGC will be holding an OSHA 10 course in construction safety and health on Friday, April 1st from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM and Saturday, April 2nd from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM in the Gunness Student Center. The cost is $30 for AGC members, $40 for nonmembers.

fifth chapter meeting – wednesday, march 2, 2011

The fifth AGC Chapter Meeting of the year (second of the spring semester) will be on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 6:00 pm in Marston 132.  The guest speaker will be Sean Ditto, Project Manager for Consigli Construction in Enfield, CT. His presentation will be on the Putnam Vocational High School Project in Springfield, MA which is currently under construction.

fourth chapter meeting – tuesday, february 8, 2011

The first AGC Chapter Meeting of the spring semester and fourth of the year will be on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at 6:00 pm in Marston 132. The guest speaker will be Kyle Murphy, Project Manager for Baltazar Contractors in Ludlow, MA.  Kyle is a 2005 graduate of UMass Amherst and former president of AGC.  His presentation will offer career advice and discuss life after college.
